Mike Scott Marquee

b. April 26, 1955 · New York Mets 1979–1982, Houston Astros 1983–1991

On September 25, 1986 he no-hit San Francisco and Houston clinched the division with the last out, which no pitcher had done. He went 18-10 that season with a 2.22 earned run average, five shutouts and 306 strikeouts, led the league in all but the wins, and won the Cy Young Award with 15 of the 24 first-place votes.

He beat the Mets twice in that Championship Series and was its most valuable player although his club lost, which has happened only a handful of times. New York collected scuffed baseballs from his starts and showed them to reporters; nothing was ever proved and the accusation followed him out of the game.

He had gone 29-44 in five years before Roger Craig taught him the split-fingered fastball in the winter of 1984. Thirteen seasons gave him 124 wins against 108, a 3.54 earned run average, 2,068 innings and 22 shutouts. A shoulder tear finished him at thirty-six. The 1997 ballot gave him two votes of 473.
