Baltimore brought him up in 1991 and kept him ten years; New York had the other eight. He won at least eleven games in every full season, seventeen in a row, and led the American League in wins in 1995 with 19 and in shutouts that year with four. He was chosen for five All-Star teams and won seven Gold Gloves.

He won eighteen games in his first full season, 1992, and nineteen twice more for Baltimore. Across eighteen years he made 536 starts in 537 appearances, threw 3,562 innings, and finished 270-153 with a 3.68 earned run average. In his last four seasons, all of them after he turned 36, he started thirty or more games three times.

The twenty-win season came at the end: 20-9 in 2008, at 39, the only one of his career, and he retired that winter. The writers took six ballots to elect him. In 2019 they gave him 326 votes of 425 — the same ballot on which Mariano Rivera was named by every voter.
