Mike Hargrove Marquee

b. October 26, 1949 · Texas Rangers 1974–1978, San Diego Padres 1979, Cleveland Indians 1979–1985

He adjusted his batting gloves, his helmet, his sleeves and his stance between every pitch, and pitchers hated him for it. He also led the American League in walks in 1976 with 97 and in 1978 with 107, and finished with 965 against 5,564 at bats and a .290 average.

Texas made him Rookie of the Year in 1974, when he hit .323 with 16 of the 24 first-place votes, and traded him five years later. Cleveland got the rest: seven seasons, a .292 average there, 179 hits in 1980. Twelve seasons gave him 1,614 hits and one All-Star selection.

He managed Cleveland from 1991 to 1999 and took the club to the World Series in 1995 and 1997, the first pennants Cleveland had won in forty-one years. He managed the Orioles and the Mariners after that. The 1991 ballot gave him one vote of 443.
