He went 23-9 with a 3.08 earned run average and 16 complete games in 1979 and won the Cy Young Award with 26 of the 28 first-place votes. Baltimore won 102 games and lost the World Series in seven. Eighteen seasons gave him 167 wins against 143, a 3.90 earned run average, 2,770 innings and 101 complete games.
He tore his Achilles tendon in 1985 and was never the same pitcher, and Baltimore traded him to Toronto in 1987, where he pitched four more years and started the last game at Exhibition Stadium. He came back to Baltimore in 1991 and pitched the last inning at Memorial Stadium.
He was a coach, a broadcaster and then the club's general manager, and left that job in 2008 after two losing seasons. He shot himself at his home in Maryland in August 2011, at fifty-nine. The 1998 ballot gave him two votes of 473.
