Mickey Rivers hit leadoff and played center field for the New York Yankees teams that won the World Series in 1977 and 1978, and did it with a shuffling gait and a public persona that made him one of the most quoted men in a clubhouse full of them.
He had come from California, where he led the American League with 70 stolen bases in 1975, and the trade to New York gave him the stage. His first Yankee season brought an All-Star selection and a third-place finish in Most Valuable Player voting.
Born in Miami in 1948, Rivers moved to Texas in 1979 and played there through 1984, finishing with 1,660 hits, 267 stolen bases and a .295 career average.
