Max Carey

Max Carey Marquee Hall of Fame 1961

b. January 11, 1890 · Pittsburgh Pirates 1910–1926, Brooklyn Robins 1926–1929

He was studying for the Lutheran ministry in Indiana when he signed as a professional under a name that was not the one he was born with. Pittsburgh brought him up in 1910 and kept him for seventeen years. He played 1,624 games in center field and collected 2,665 hits and 1,545 runs.

His method was study rather than speed alone, and he timed pitchers' motions from the bench. He finished with 738 stolen bases, ninth on the career list, and led the National League in triples twice and in walks twice. In 1922, at 32, he had his best year at the plate: 207 hits and 140 runs.

Pittsburgh won the 1925 World Series with Carey its captain in center field. The next August the club released him after he led a players' vote against Fred Clarke, a club officer who had been sitting on the bench during games. Brooklyn took him for his last four seasons, and the Hall of Fame elected him in 1961.
