He stole 104 bases in 1962, passing Ty Cobb's 96 from 1915 and playing 165 games to do it, with 208 hits and 130 runs. He was the Most Valuable Player of the National League that year and led the league in steals six years running.

He spent eight and a half years in the minor leagues before the Dodgers called him up at twenty-six, and he had 586 stolen bases and 2,134 hits by the end, with five All-Star selections, two Gold Gloves and three World Series titles. He is generally credited with returning the stolen base to the game after twenty years in which nobody ran.

Fifteen writers' ballots got him to 166 votes of 432 at the peak, in 1979, and six committees have considered him since without electing him. He managed Seattle for a season and a half, badly, and was open about the cocaine addiction that followed. He died in 2022, at eighty-nine.
