The Cubs traded him to St. Louis in the middle of the 1964 season, after 52 games in Chicago, and the Cardinals won the World Series that October. Ten years later, at 35, he stole 118 bases in a single season, a figure beaten only by Rickey Henderson's 130 in 1982. He was caught 33 times that year.

Henderson finished 468 steals clear of him. Behind Brock, by 24, sits Billy Hamilton, who played his last game in 1901, which is a way of saying Brock had no modern rival until Henderson turned up. He also reached 3,000 hits, on August 13, 1979, in his final season, ending with 3,023.

He struck out 1,730 times, the second-highest total of any hitter in the majors across his playing years. What the record cannot show is that the stolen base had gone out of fashion before he arrived and was standard equipment by the time he left. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1985 and died on September 6, 2020.
