Lou Brock's 3,000th Hit

Lou Brock batted twice on August 13, 1979 and singled both times. The second was his 3,000th hit, and it came against the Chicago Cubs, who had traded him to St. Louis fifteen years earlier in one of the most lopsided deals the sport has recorded. The Cardinals won 3–2.

Brock was forty and in his final season. The trade had turned him into the game's premier base stealer: he led the National League eight times, stole 118 bases in 1974 at the age of thirty-five, and helped St. Louis to two championships in the 1960s.

He finished the year with 3,023 hits and 938 stolen bases, the most anyone had accumulated at that point. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1985.
