In 1979 he hit 30 home runs, drove in 82 and batted .307 for the Montreal club that won 95 games and lost the division on the last weekend. Three times that season he hit three home runs in a game, which almost nobody has managed inside one year.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,789 hits, 256 home runs, 992 runs batted in, 360 doubles and a .263 average, with two All-Star selections. Montreal traded him to Texas after 1981 for Al Oliver, and he hit 32 home runs for the Rangers at thirty-three.

He was a designated hitter by the end and hit .263 for his career with almost no walks, which is why the Hall of Fame vote in 1994 gave him two of 456. He has managed Detroit and coached and managed in the minor leagues for thirty years since.
