Larry Herndon hit a three-run home run in the opening game of the 1984 World Series and caught the final out of the fifth, which bracketed Detroit's championship neatly. He had also hit the home run that won the Tigers' opening game of that season, the start of their 35-5 beginning.
He came up with San Francisco and spent six seasons there in center field before the trade to Detroit in 1982, where he moved to left and had the two best years of his career, batting .292 and .280 with real power.
Born in Sunflower, Mississippi in 1953, Herndon batted .274 with 1,334 hits and 107 home runs across fifteen seasons, and later coached for the Tigers.
