Larry Doyle Marquee

The line is his, and it is the only thing most people know about him: it's great to be young and a Giant. He was the second baseman for John McGraw's clubs that won three straight pennants from 1911 to 1913, and the Chalmers Award went to him in 1912 with 48 points of a possible 64.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,887 hits, 299 doubles, 123 triples, 793 runs batted in, 298 stolen bases and a .290 average. He led the National League in hits twice, in triples in 1911 with 25, and in doubles in 1915 with 40 — the season he hit .320, the best in the league.

Chicago had him for a season and a half and traded him back. He retired at thirty-four, was found to have tuberculosis in 1942, and spent three years in a sanatorium in Saranac Lake, New York, where he then lived for the rest of his life. Five ballots and two committees have taken up his name. He died in 1974, at eighty-seven.
