LaMarr Hoyt Marquee
LaMarr Hoyt's 1983 was the season everything went right. Pitching for a Chicago White Sox team that ran away with the American League West, he led the league in wins and took the Cy Young Award, then beat Baltimore in the opening game of the League Championship Series.
Hoyt had come up with the White Sox in September 1979 and spent six years there, working mostly as a starter: 172 starts across 244 appearances, 48 of them complete games. Control was his method rather than power, and he finished with 681 strikeouts across 1,311 innings and a 3.99 earned run average.
A trade sent him to San Diego before the 1985 season, and he made the All-Star team that July and was named its Most Valuable Player. It was the last good year. He pitched once more in 1986, finished 98-68 for his career, and died on November 29, 2021.
