He won 362 games and lost 208 in fifteen seasons, working 5,067 innings and completing 532 of his 562 starts. He won thirty or more games in seven of his first nine years, four of them consecutively from 1891 through 1894. He had 298 wins after ten seasons and went past 300 in his eleventh.
The pitching distance moved back to sixty feet six inches in 1893, ten and a half feet farther than he had ever thrown from. He won 34 that year and 32 the next, and led the National League in wins in 1896, 1897 and 1898. Boston took the pennant five times while he was there.
He left the majors after 1901 and spent 1902 and 1903 managing in the minor leagues. He came back at thirty-four and won 21 games for St. Louis in 1904 with a 2.02 earned run average, then finished with Philadelphia in 1906. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1949, four years before he died.
