Born September 30, 1987
Willemstad, , Curaçao
He has 476 saves, fourth behind Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith, with a 2.57 earned run average and 1,278 strikeouts in 927 innings across sixteen seasons. He led the National League in saves in 2017 and again in 2022, and has been chosen for four All-Star teams.
The Dodgers signed him out of Curaçao as a catcher. He hit .229 in the low minors over four seasons and was converted to pitching in 2009 because the arm was worth more than the bat; he was in the major leagues within a year and closing within two.
Almost all of it is one pitch. The cutter he throws breaks late and away from a right-handed hitter's barrel, and he has used it for the great majority of his deliveries for more than a decade — hitters know what is coming and it has not helped them much. He spent twelve seasons in Los Angeles and has since pitched for Atlanta, Boston and the Angels.
