Ken Heintzelman Marquee

b. October 14, 1915 · Pittsburgh Pirates 1937–1942, 1946–1947, Philadelphia Phillies 1947–1952

He went 17-10 with a 3.02 earned run average and five shutouts in 1949, the most in the league, for a Philadelphia club that finished third — one year before the same core won the pennant as the Whiz Kids. He walked more batters than he struck out most years, which is not supposed to work, and it worked for him in 1949 anyway.

Thirteen seasons gave him 77 wins against 98, a 3.93 earned run average, 1,501 innings, 66 complete games and 18 shutouts. Pittsburgh had him for six years before Philadelphia, where he pitched for five more, including a scoreless relief appearance in the 1950 World Series that Philadelphia was swept out of.

He was from rural Ohio and went back there to farm after baseball. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 2000, at eighty-four.
