Keith Hernandez played first base for the St. Louis Cardinals for nine seasons before a 1983 trade to the Mets, where he spent six more years, finishing his career with a brief stint in Cleveland in 1990.

He batted .296 with 2,182 hits over 2,088 games, driving in 1,071 runs and drawing 1,070 walks, a genuinely disciplined hitter's line built up across sixteen major-league seasons.

His defense was remarkable for its consistency: eleven consecutive Gold Gloves, from 1978 through 1988, a run unmatched by almost anyone else in this database, and he was named Most Valuable Player in 1979.

He made five trips to the All-Star Game, the first in 1979 and the last in 1987. San Francisco was his birthplace, on October 20, 1953; he batted and threw left-handed.
