Juan Marichal Marquee Hall of Fame 1983

He came out of Laguna Verde in the Dominican Republic throwing from over the top, from three-quarters, and from nearly sidearm, changing the angle from one pitch to the next. He also finished what he started, completing 244 of his 457 starts and throwing 52 shutouts. Six times between 1963 and 1969 he won twenty games or more.

Until 1967 a single Cy Young Award covered both leagues, and Sandy Koufax took it in three of Marichal's best seasons. He never won one. He led the National League in wins with 25 in 1963 and 26 in 1968, led in shutouts twice, no-hit the Houston Colt .45s 1-0 in June 1963, and made nine All-Star teams.

On August 22, 1965, with the Giants and Dodgers fighting for a pennant, he turned and hit catcher John Roseboro on the head with his bat. He was fined and suspended, and the image stayed attached to him. Roseboro later spoke up for his election, and in 1983 Marichal became the first Dominican player in the Hall of Fame.
