Seventeen seasons gave him 1,936 hits, 434 home runs, 1,404 runs batted in and a .295 average. He was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1996 and again in 1998, led the league in home runs in 1992 and 1993, and in 1998 led in doubles with 50 and in runs batted in with 157. He won six Silver Sluggers.

He played 1,689 games in those seventeen seasons, which is fewer than a hundred a year, and he never once played 160. That is the whole shape of him: enormous when he was in the lineup and frequently not in it. Three All-Star selections is a strange figure to sit beside two most valuable player awards, and it comes from the same cause.

He was Texas's for eleven years, then went to Detroit, Cleveland and Kansas City, and was finished at thirty-five. The writers gave him 5 percent of the vote in 2011 and 4 percent in 2012, which took him off the ballot after two appearances. Two awards for the best player in the league, and two years of being considered for the Hall.
