He hit 25 or more home runs in four seasons, including 30 in 2004 for the White Sox, which shortstops of that era rarely did, and hit .243 for his career with 630 walks and 1,332 strikeouts. It is a shape of player the game learned to value in the middle of his career and not before.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,348 hits, 302 doubles, 816 runs batted in and 136 stolen bases. He was Puerto Rican, from Manatí, and his brother Javier caught in the major leagues for ten years.

He moved to second base for the Mets at thirty-six and hit 18 home runs there in 2006 for a club that won 97 games. He was never an All-Star and never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot.
