Johnny Murphy pitched for the New York Yankees for his entire career apart from a final season in Boston, spanning 1932 to 1947 with time away during the Second World War.

He went 93-53 with a 3.50 earned run average over 1,045 innings pitched, saving 107 games almost entirely in relief, a role still uncommon when he played it.

His three All-Star selections came in consecutive seasons, 1937, 1938 and 1939, recognizing one of the earliest true relief specialists in the sport.

He was born in New York City on July 14, 1908, and batted and threw right-handed, having spent almost the whole of his major-league career with the one club, apart from a final season in Boston, and he lived until January 14, 1970.
