Earl Weaver used him against right-handed pitching and nothing else, and in 1982 that produced .320 with 24 home runs and 66 runs batted in from 322 at bats. He was thirty-five. He hit 15 more the following year for the club that won the World Series.

Sixteen seasons gave him 881 hits, 116 home runs, 441 runs batted in, 446 walks and a .253 average. Cleveland had him for eight years and used him at second, third and the outfield; Baltimore had him for seven and used him as a weapon.

He told reporters he wanted the fans to wave blank placards, and that he warmed up by standing in front of a mirror. He broadcast Orioles games for a decade afterward. The 1991 ballot gave him one vote of 443.
