Johan Santana Marquee

He won the Cy Young Award in 2004 and again in 2006, led his league in strikeouts three years running from 2004, and took the pitching Triple Crown in 2006. Twelve seasons gave him 139 wins against 78, 1,988 strikeouts and a 3.20 earned run average over 2,025 innings, with four All-Star selections.

Minnesota used him out of the bullpen for four years before handing him a rotation spot in 2004, and the five seasons that followed were as good as anyone's in the game. New York traded for him after 2007 and got one excellent year and then a shoulder that would not hold. He did not pitch at all in 2011, made 21 starts in 2012, and never pitched again.

He stopped at thirty-three with 139 wins, which was never going to be a Hall of Fame number however good the best of it was. The writers gave him ten votes out of 422 in 2018 and he came off the ballot after one year. Two Cy Young Awards and a Triple Crown inside twelve seasons is the whole argument, and it did not get a second hearing.
