Joe Tinker Marquee Hall of Fame 1946

He played shortstop for the Cubs teams that won pennants in 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1910, and the World Series in 1907 and 1908. The 1906 club went 116-36, and no team has won more games in a season since. He batted .262 over fifteen years with 1,690 hits and 336 stolen bases.

Franklin P. Adams put the three names into a few lines of verse for a New York paper in 1910, and Tinker to Evers to Chance outlived all three men as a phrase. He and Evers are said to have gone years barely speaking to each other, and to have turned the double play anyway.

Cincinnati made him its manager in 1913, the year he hit .317, and he jumped to the Federal League the season after. His Chicago club won that league's last pennant, in 1915, and he returned to the Cubs for seven games in 1916. The Old Timers Committee elected him in 1946 with Evers and Chance; he died on his sixty-eighth birthday two years later.
