Jim Bouton Marquee

b. March 8, 1939 · New York Yankees 1962–1968, Seattle Pilots 1969, Houston Astros 1969–1970, Atlanta Braves 1978

He went 21-7 with a 2.53 earned run average for the 1963 Yankees, who lost the World Series to the Dodgers in a sweep, then 18-13 the year after and won two games in the 1964 World Series, which New York also lost. He was twenty-four and twenty-five and had a fastball hard enough that they called him Bulldog. His arm was gone within two years.

In 1969, pitching in relief for an expansion club, he kept a diary that became Ball Four, which described drug use, drinking and womanizing among teammates in language no one had used about the game in print. Baseball's commissioner tried to make him sign a statement calling it untrue; he refused, and was frozen out of coaching and broadcasting jobs for years.

Ten seasons gave him 62 wins against 63, a 3.57 earned run average, 1,238 innings and 11 shutouts. He came back to pitch one more game for Atlanta in 1978, at thirty-nine, eight years after he had supposedly quit. He also helped invent Big League Chew bubble gum. He died in 2019, at eighty. The 1984 ballot gave him three votes of 403.
