In August 2013 he was one of thirteen players suspended for their dealings with the Biogenesis clinic in Florida, missed fifty games, came back for Detroit's postseason, and signed with St. Louis for four years and $53 million in November. The signing was denounced by other players at the time and is one of the reasons the drug agreement was renegotiated the following winter.
Fifteen seasons gave him 1,761 hits, 202 home runs, 873 runs batted in, 376 doubles and a .267 average, with three All-Star selections. He was a shortstop with limited range and reliable hands who kept the position into his thirties by hitting more than most who play it.
He was Dominican, signed at sixteen, and reached Cleveland at twenty-one. The 2023 ballot gave him no votes at all.
