In 1974 he hit .301 with 25 home runs and a league-leading 118 runs batted in for Texas and won the Most Valuable Player award with 10 first-place votes. He was twenty-three, and the Rangers had improved by 27 games. He hit 41 home runs for Atlanta in 1977 and led the National League with 117 walks the following year.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,443 hits, 240 home runs, 882 runs batted in, 831 walks and a .261 average, with two All-Star selections. He was the first player taken in the 1969 draft, out of a California high school.

He managed his son Sean's Long Beach team to consecutive Little League World Series titles in 1992 and 1993, and Sean then played seven seasons in the major leagues. The 1991 ballot gave him one vote of 443.
