He finished 97-130 with a 4.81 earned run average over 2,036 innings, which is a hard way to make a nineteen-year career. He did it by throwing a sinker nobody could lift and by being useful in whatever role a club had open: 248 starts early, 719 appearances in all, most of the last decade in relief.
Colorado took him in the first round in 1993 and brought him up at twenty-one. He made 34 starts at Coors Field in 1998, which is its own kind of achievement, and lost 17. He was traded or signed away nine more times after that.
He pitched for ten franchises and never appeared in a World Series. He was still getting outs at thirty-nine for Tampa Bay in 2013 and pitched a last season for the Dodgers in 2014. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
