Jake Daubert Marquee

He hit .350 in 1913 and .329 in 1914, the best in the league both years, and won the Chalmers Award — the Most Valuable Player prize of the time — for the first of them. Fifteen seasons gave him 2,326 hits, 165 triples, 251 stolen bases and a .303 average.

He was a coal miner in Pennsylvania before baseball and led the National League in triples twice, at thirty-four and thirty-eight. Brooklyn traded him to Cincinnati in 1919 after a salary dispute and he played on the club that won that year's tainted World Series.

He played 102 games in 1924, at forty, and then had an appendectomy in October; complications killed him on October 9, six weeks after his last game. Five writers' ballots and eighteen committees have taken up his name.
