He reached Seattle in 2001 and won Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season, which only Fred Lynn had done before him. The Mariners won 116 games that year, a total no club in the archive has bettered. He led the American League in hits seven times and in stolen bases once, the stolen-base title coming in that first year.

The 262 hits he collected in 2004 are the most anyone has managed in a season here, ahead of George Sisler's 257 in 1920. From 2001 through 2010 he never finished below 200, the longest such run in the archive, and he won a Gold Glove in the outfield in every one of those ten years.

His 3,000th hit came on August 7, 2016, playing for Miami, and he kept going until March 2019, ending with 3,089 hits and 509 stolen bases. The writers elected him in 2025 on 393 of 394 ballots, one short of unanimous. His seasons in Japan are not part of this record.
