Hugh Duffy Marquee Hall of Fame 1945

b. November 26, 1866 · Chicago White Stockings 1888–1889, Chicago Pirates 1890, Boston Reds 1891, Boston Beaneaters 1892–1900, Milwaukee Brewers 1901, Philadelphia Phillies 1904–1906

Duffy played in four major leagues in as many years. Chicago's National League club had him in 1888 and 1889; he jumped to the Players' League in 1890, to the American Association's Boston Reds in 1891, and back to the National League's Boston club in 1892, as the game's labor wars folded one circuit after another.

In 1894 he had 237 hits in 539 at-bats, an average of .440, with 51 doubles and 18 home runs, and he led the National League in all three counting categories. He is credited with a Triple Crown for that season, though runs-batted-in totals from the 1890s were reconstructed long afterward and the surviving figures put Sam Thompson ahead of him.

A five-foot-seven outfielder, he played center field and then left field for Boston's National League club for nine seasons, finishing with 2,293 hits, 1,554 runs, and 574 stolen bases. He managed and coached for decades after he stopped playing, and the Hall of Fame elected him in 1945, nearly forty years after his last game.
