Born February 18, 1897
Millsboro, DE, USA
Huck Betts pitched six seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies, disappeared into the International League for six more, and came back with the Boston Braves in 1932 at thirty-five. He then won thirty-four games over the next three years for a club that had no business winning that many.
The 1933 season was his best: thirteen wins, a 2.79 earned run average and four shutouts. He was a control pitcher rather than a strikeout one, 323 in 1,366 innings, which was the way to survive that long.
Born in Millsboro, Delaware in 1897, Betts finished 61-68 with 53 complete games. He lived to ninety, dying in June 1987.
