Peitz had his best season at thirty-one, hitting .315 with 122 hits and 60 runs batted in for Cincinnati in 1902. He played 112 games that year, all behind the plate, during the longest stretch of a career that demanded work at several positions.
Sixteen major-league seasons gave him 1,117 hits, 191 doubles, 66 triples, 560 runs batted in and a .271 average. He caught 961 games but also played at least 74 apiece at first base, second base and third base. Few catchers of his period accumulated a similarly broad defensive record.
Peitz began with the National League's St. Louis Browns in 1892 and spent nine seasons with Cincinnati from 1896 through 1904. Two years in Pittsburgh followed. After six seasons away from the majors, he returned to St. Louis for three final games with the Cardinals in 1913. The 1939 Hall of Fame ballot gave him one vote of 274.
