Harry Hooper Marquee Hall of Fame 1971

b. August 24, 1887 · Boston Red Sox 1909–1920, Chicago White Sox 1921–1925

He played 2,183 games in right field, a total only Roberto Clemente and Paul Waner have exceeded. Across seventeen seasons he scored 1,429 runs, stole 375 bases and drew 1,136 walks against just 582 strikeouts, batting .281 left-handed. Boston had a winning record in ten of his twelve years there.

The Red Sox won the World Series in 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918, and he was in right field for all four. He said afterward that he was the one who kept pressing the club to stop pitching Babe Ruth and put him in the outfield every day. Boston sold him to the White Sox after 1920.

He reached Chicago the season after eight White Sox were suspended for fixing the 1919 World Series. The team finished seventh, fifth, seventh, eighth and fifth in his five years there, and he batted over .300 in three of them. The writers never gave him more than six votes; the Veterans Committee elected him in 1971, three years before he died.
