Detroit brought him up in 1914, sent him back to the minors, and had him again from 1916 on. He gave the Tigers fourteen more seasons, most of them in the outfield and several with Ty Cobb as his manager. He led the American League with 237 hits in 1921 and with 45 doubles in 1924.

The averages ran .394 in 1921, .403 in 1923, .393 in 1925, and .398 in 1927; in the even years between he hit .356, .346, and .367. He drove in a hundred or more eight times, finished with 1,539 runs batted in, 2,660 hits, and a career mark of .342.

Arthritis in his wrists cost him the whole of 1931, and a brief return with Cincinnati in 1932 ended it. He went into the radio booth for the Tigers and stayed there until he died in 1951, at fifty-six. The Hall of Fame elected him the following year.
