Boston sent him to Florida in November 2005 in the deal for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, and he was Rookie of the Year the following season. In 2008 he led the National League with 125 runs; in 2009 he hit .342, the best average in the league, with 24 home runs and 27 steals from shortstop.
Fifteen seasons gave him 1,834 hits, 271 home runs, 917 runs batted in, 281 stolen bases and a .289 average, with three All-Star selections and two Silver Sluggers. He was one of the best shortstops in the game for five years and then a first baseman, a left fielder and a designated hitter as the shoulder and the range went.
He came back to Boston in 2015 on a four-year contract and hit 30 home runs in 2016. He is Dominican and was signed at sixteen. His first ballot, in 2025, gave him no votes at all.
