Gowdy caught 128 games for the 1914 Boston Braves, who went 94-59, won the National League pennant and won the World Series. He collected 89 hits, drove in 46 runs and stole 14 bases during that regular season, all career highs except his batting average.
Seventeen seasons gave him 738 hits, 124 doubles, 322 runs batted in and a .270 average across 1,050 games. He caught 893 games and played 51 at first base. His record contains no major-league appearances in 1918, followed by a return to Boston in 1919.
Gowdy began with the Giants, moved to Boston in 1911 and returned to New York for parts of 1923 through 1925 before another Braves stint. He appeared on seventeen Hall of Fame ballots from 1937 through 1960, reaching 90 votes in 1955 but never gaining election. He managed Cincinnati for four games in 1946, going 3-1. He died in 1966, at seventy-six.
