Born July 29, 1951
Lubbock, TX, USA
Between May 1978 and May 1982 he pitched 269 and a third innings without giving up a home run, which is the record for a pitcher of any kind. He threw a sinker that stayed at the knees and got ground balls almost exclusively.
Sixteen seasons gave him 150 saves, 59 wins and a 3.10 earned run average across 1,130 innings and 710 games. His best year was 1982: 30 saves, a 1.83 earned run average and 78 appearances, and he was an All-Star.
He was called Moon Man for a manner his teammates found difficult to describe precisely, and he raised horses. He pitched thirteen seasons for San Francisco and four for the Angels. No Hall of Fame ballot listed him.
