He led the National League with 120 runs batted in in 1975 and had a better year still in 1977: 39 home runs, 130 runs batted in, .309. Philadelphia won its division in three straight seasons around those years and could not get past the Championship Series in any of them.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,795 hits, 307 home runs, 1,128 runs batted in, 845 walks and a .276 average, with four All-Star selections. He was large, hit the ball a long way, and was a liability in left field, which is the whole of the scouting report and most of why the White Sox used him as a designated hitter for his last four years. He won the Outstanding Designated Hitter award twice there.

The Roberto Clemente Award, for what a player does away from the field, came to him in 1978, at twenty-seven. He has run a barbecue stand at Citizens Bank Park since it opened. The 1990 ballot gave him one vote of 444.
