He signed with Philadelphia at seventeen and played his first game before his eighteenth birthday. By 1950 he was the shortstop and captain of the club that won the pennant with the youngest roster in the league, hitting .270 with 82 runs batted in, and he hit .429 in that World Series.
Seventeen seasons gave him 1,529 hits, 272 doubles, 104 home runs, 708 runs batted in and a .262 average, with three All-Star selections. He moved to second base in 1954 and was an All-Star at both positions.
In 1956 and 1957 he pitched in four games, and in 1962, at thirty-five, Kansas City brought him back to pitch three more after five years away. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1993, at sixty-six.
