Born January 28, 1847
New York, NY, USA
The two halves of his career are on opposite sides of a line. Five seasons with the Boston Red Stockings from 1871 gave him 483 hits in 262 games at .350; those were played in the National Association, which Major League Baseball has never counted as a major league, so they are not in the totals on this page. Seven seasons from 1876 gave him 383 hits at .256, and those are.
He was thirty when the National League began, and the difference between the two lines is mostly the difference between a man at his peak and a man past it. He played 530 games at shortstop and was reckoned the best in the game at it.
He was Harry Wright's younger brother, and the two of them ran the Cincinnati Red Stockings side of 1869 that toured undefeated. He later sold sporting goods in Boston and is credited with introducing golf to the city. The Centennial Commission elected him in 1937, the year he died.

Seasons outside MLB's recognized major leagues appear in All seasons, but not in Major leagues or the leaderboards. For George Wright, that is 1871–1875. Why totals can differ.
