Boston Red Stockings
The Red Stockings won the National Association pennant in 1872, 1873, 1874 and 1875, every year but the first, and went 225-60 across the Association's five seasons. That is a winning rate of .789, higher than any club in any league has managed over a comparable stretch. In 1875 they were 71-8.
Harry Wright managed all five seasons and every one of the wins, and had assembled the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings before that — the first openly all-salaried club. His brother George played shortstop here, and Al Spalding pitched. All three are in the Hall of Fame, as are Deacon White and Jim O'Rourke.
The National Association is not counted as a major league by Major League Baseball, so none of this appears in the career totals on this site: the players are recorded and not credited. The club joined the National League at its founding in 1876 as the Boston Red Caps, and is the ancestor of the Atlanta Braves. Home was the South End Grounds.
