McBride held Washington's shortstop job through an era in which his defense kept him in the lineup despite a .218 career average. He played at least 150 games in seven consecutive seasons from 1908 through 1914, reaching a high of 156 twice and collecting a career-best 131 hits in 1911.
Sixteen seasons gave him 1,203 hits, 140 doubles, 516 runs, 447 runs batted in and 133 stolen bases. He played 1,626 games at shortstop and only 28 anywhere else. His five home runs with Washington were preceded by two for St. Louis, leaving him with seven in 5,526 at bats.
Brief stays with Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and St. Louis came before McBride joined the Senators in 1908. He received Most Valuable Player votes in four straight seasons from 1911 through 1914. After finishing his playing career in 1920, he managed Washington to an 80-73 record and fourth place in 1921. He died in 1973, at ninety-two.
