George Crowe Marquee

He played for the New York Black Yankees and Philadelphia Stars before organized baseball integrated its lower levels, and did not reach the National League until he was past thirty. He hit 31 home runs and drove in 92 runs for Cincinnati in 1957, at thirty-six, making his only All-Star team.

Eleven seasons gave him 516 hits, 76 doubles, 81 home runs, 243 runs batted in and a .275 average, mostly as a first baseman and pinch hitter. He was one of the better pinch hitters in the National League in his final seasons with St. Louis.

After retiring in 1961 he became a nationally ranked bowler, competing on the professional bowling tour and later becoming one of the first Black players to work for a major-league scouting department. He died in 2011, at eighty-nine.
