George Carr Marquee

George Carr was a large man called Tank who hit .316 in the games that were scored, which puts him among the better hitters in the surviving Negro Leagues record. He also stole 127 bases, which for a first baseman of any size is unusual.

He was with the Kansas City Monarchs for their first three seasons in the Negro National League, then spent five years with the Hilldale Club, including the 1925 team that won the Colored World Series. The Bacharach Giants, the Lincoln Giants, the Baltimore Black Sox and the Philadelphia Stars followed.

Born in Atlanta in 1894, Carr collected 747 hits with 56 home runs and 428 runs batted in across 642 recorded games. He was fifty-three at his death in January 1948.
