Gene Tenace Marquee

b. October 10, 1946 · Oakland Athletics 1969–1976, San Diego Padres 1977–1980, St. Louis Cardinals 1981–1982, Pittsburgh Pirates 1983

He had 5 home runs in 82 regular-season games in 1972 and then hit 4 in the World Series, including two in his first two at bats of the first game, and was its most valuable player. Oakland won that title and the two after it, and he caught and played first base for all three.

He walked 984 times and made 1,060 hits, a ratio almost nobody has, and led the American League in walks in 1974 with 110 and the National League in 1977 with 125. His average was .241 and he reached base more often than most .300 hitters of the period, which is the point.

Fifteen seasons gave him 201 home runs and 674 runs batted in. He was an All-Star once. He has coached hitters for four clubs since, including the 1992 and 1993 Toronto champions. The 1989 ballot gave him one vote of 447.
