Born April 21, 1937
Grove City, PA, USA
He was Rookie of the Year in 1963 at twenty-six, having spent six years in the minor leagues, going 19-8 with a 2.33 earned run average, the lowest in the American League. He led it again in 1966 with a 1.98 and won 20 games in 1964.
Fourteen seasons gave him 124 wins against 103, a 3.25 earned run average, 2,081 innings and 23 shutouts. He also hit .222 with 19 home runs, was used to pinch-hit for years, and hit two grand slams.
Eleven of the seasons were with the White Sox in the 1960s, when Comiskey Park and that pitching staff made low scores routine and the club could not hit enough to win a pennant with them. He finished with three years in Boston. No Hall of Fame ballot listed him. He died in 2023, at eighty-five.
