He won the Gold Glove every year from 1975 to 1982 and is the fielder that line was written about — Ralph Kiner's, in a broadcast, and it has followed him for fifty years. He played 1,687 games in the outfield and made the catch that ended the 1980 Championship Series.
Fifteen seasons gave him 1,802 hits, 337 doubles, 248 stolen bases and a .285 average. He hit .319 for San Francisco in 1973 and .330 in 1976 for Philadelphia, and the Phillies traded Willie Montañez to get him at twenty-five.
He served in Vietnam at nineteen and came back with a skin condition that is why he wore a beard for his whole career. He won the Roberto Clemente Award in 1986. The 1992 ballot gave him no votes at all.
