Fielder Jones Marquee

b. August 13, 1871 · Brooklyn Bridegrooms 1896–1898, Brooklyn Superbas 1899–1900, Chicago White Sox 1901–1908, St. Louis Terriers 1914–1915

The 1906 White Sox hit .230 as a club, the worst in the American League, and won 93 games and the pennant, and then beat a Cubs club that had won 116. Jones ran that team from center field and had run it since 1904. His clubs finished third, second, first, third and third in five seasons.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,920 hits, 1,180 runs, 817 walks, 359 stolen bases and a .285 average. He walked more than he struck out every year and played center field as shallow as anyone dared.

He quit at thirty-seven over a contract, went into the lumber business in Oregon, and came back in 1914 to manage the Federal League club in St. Louis, then the Browns until 1918. Seven ballots and committees have taken up his name. He died in 1934, at sixty-two.
