Eppa Rixey Marquee Hall of Fame 1963

He was the losing pitcher in a no-hitter in his rookie year, when Jeff Tesreau held the Phillies hitless on September 6, 1912. Philadelphia gave him eight seasons and little help behind him: he went 87-103 there, including 11-22 in 1920 for a club that finished last. He missed 1918 altogether, and the 1915 Phillies were the only pennant winner he ever pitched for.

Cincinnati traded for him after that 1920 season and kept him thirteen years, in which he went 179-148. He won 25 games in 1922, the most in the National League, and twenty or more twice after that. Those Reds finished second three times and never won the pennant.

He was 6-foot-5 and threw left-handed, and he finished with 4,494 innings, 290 complete games and a 3.15 earned run average. The writers never gave him more than 142 votes of 269. The Veterans Committee elected him in 1963; he died on February 28 of that year and did not live to be inducted.
